About
Meet Matthew
The short version
Teaching that starts with the caregiver, not the checklist
Most caregiving resources focus on tasks. Matthew’s work starts one step earlier: with the person doing the caring, and whether they can keep going.
The work grew out of time spent alongside caregivers in living rooms, hospital hallways, church basements, and late-night phone calls. The same questions kept surfacing: How do I think about this? Does it mean anything? How long can I keep this up?
Those three questions became the framework behind everything here: mindset, purpose, and sustainability. They shape the book Staying in the Trenches, the free training videos, the workshops and coaching, and the Light in the Trenches ministry. The tone is plain and unhurried. No pressure to perform, no pretending the hard parts aren’t hard and room for faith to be part of the conversation rather than a footnote.
How Matthew works
Four commitments in every room
Honesty before optimism
Encouragement only helps when it's built on a truthful description of the situation.
Practical over theoretical
Ideas are only useful if a tired caregiver can act on them this week.
Faith held gently
Faith-centered and never coercive. People at any point in their journey are welcome.
Long-haul thinking
Planning for years of caregiving, not just getting through the next appointment.
